Crystalline synths and whispered Japanese vocals submerged in field recordings of water and forests. A liquid, eco-conscious journey through 90s ambient and IDM.
Dream Dolphin creates a soundscape that feels like being gently lowered into a warm, bioluminescent ocean. It is a world where the boundary between technology and nature dissolves; digital synthesizers breathe like living organisms while field recordings of waves and birds are treated with the same reverence as a lead melody. The music is deeply rooted in the 'environmental' ambient tradition of Japan, yet it carries a youthful, almost diary-like intimacy through Noriko Kodera's soft spoken-word delivery.
What sets this project apart is its versatility and fearlessness. While many ambient artists stick to static drones, Dream Dolphin frequently introduces skittering breakbeats, acid trance ripples, and lush New Age pads. It is music that feels both incredibly vast, like a view of Earth from space, and intensely private, like a secret whispered into a tape recorder in a teenage bedroom. The production has a distinct 90s 'high-tech' warmth that feels nostalgic and futuristic simultaneously.
For those new to her work, the 2023 compilation 'Gaia' is the perfect entry point, distilling her prolific output into a cohesive narrative. It showcases her ability to move from pure environmental stillness to rhythmic downtempo without ever breaking the spell of her 'blue' aesthetic. It is essential listening for anyone who finds peace in the intersection of the natural world and the machines we use to capture it.
Dream Dolphin (stylized in all caps) is a solo music project of Japanese model and ambient music and acid trance musician Noriko Kodera (小寺法子), who is also known as Noriko Okamoto (岡本法子). She was born on June 27, 1979 in Tokyo, Japan. Dream Dolphin's career began in 1995, before going on hiatus in 2003. She was a prolific artist during her career, releasing over 20 albums during that time, beginning with the album Love Eating Alien. She released her latest album Modern Blue Ambient in 2003. She worked with the artist Yoshiaki Ochi during his live performances. She came to renewed attention in the 2020s, following the release of the 2021 Heisei no Oto compilation on Music from Memory. Music from Memory later released a compilation of Dream Dolphin's music on Gaia: Selected Ambient & Downtempo Works. In August 2024, she announced a live performance in Tokyo, Japan, where her latest single "The Roads" (2024) was performed for the first time.
