Drome

Drome, the collaborative project of German musicians Burnt Friedman and Frank Hernandez, represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of 1990s electronic music. Emerging from the Cologne scene, the duo fused the experimental rigor of Krautrock and avant-garde composition with the emerging sounds of UK trip-hop and ambient techno.

Their work is characterized by a sophisticated use of sampling and a 'manic assemblage' technique that critics have compared to the works of Edgard Varese. During their peak in the mid-90s, they became a key part of the Ninja Tune roster, helping define the label's early 'Ntone' aesthetic. Their sound identity is built on a foundation of submerged dub rhythms, industrial drones, and jazz-inflected percussion, particularly Friedman's vibraphone work. Historically, Drome is significant for being among the first to successfully integrate hip-hop's breakbeat culture into the 'chill-out' ambient framework, moving away from New Age tropes toward a more urban, gritty, and intellectually demanding sonic palette.
