High-voltage Welsh metal colliding with ragga vocals and dub basslines. Aggressive, rhythmic, and built for the center of the mosh pit.
Dub War, formed in Newport, Wales, in 1993, represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of cross-pollinated heavy music. Led by the charismatic Benji Webbe, the band broke the Britpop-dominated landscape of the mid-90s by fusing traditional metal riffs with ragga, dub, and punk.
Their signing to Earache Records signaled a shift in the label's focus toward more experimental, groove-oriented heavy music. The band's sound identity is defined by Jeff Rose's thick guitar work and Richie Glover's dub-heavy basslines, providing a foundation for Webbe's versatile vocal delivery. Critically, they were seen as ahead of their time, predating the nu-metal explosion while maintaining a more authentic connection to underground dance and reggae cultures. After disbanding in 1999, Webbe formed Skindred, which carried the 'ragga metal' torch to global success. Dub War's legacy remains that of a fierce, uncompromising live act that challenged the racial and sonic boundaries of the UK rock scene.
