Duncan Dhu

Duncan Dhu emerged from San Sebastian in 1984, providing a stark stylistic contrast to the 'Rock Radical Vasco' movement dominating the Basque region. Founded by Mikel Erentxun, Diego Vasallo, and Juan Ramón Viles, the trio initially adopted a sound heavily influenced by 1950s rockabilly and British folk, particularly the acoustic textures of artists like Lloyd Cole or The Smiths, but filtered through a uniquely Spanish melodic sensibility. Their debut, 'Por tierras escocesas', established a fascination with Celtic imagery and stripped-back arrangements.

As they evolved from a trio to a duo (Erentxun and Vasallo), their production expanded. The 1989 double album 'Autobiografía' marked a shift toward more sophisticated, international pop standards, featuring collaborations with British artists and a denser, more orchestrated sound. Critically, they are respected for maintaining a high level of lyrical integrity and for Erentxun's distinctive vocal style, which became a template for Spanish pop-rock singers in the 1990s. They occupy a central role in the 'Rock en Español' canon, bridging the gap between the underground experimentation of the early 80s and the polished pop-rock success of the 90s.
