Duster

Duster is a seminal American slowcore and space rock band formed in San Jose, California, in 1996. Primarily consisting of multi-instrumentalists Clay Parton, Canaan Dove Amber, and Jason Albertini, the group became synonymous with the 'Low Earth Orbit' home studio aesthetic.

Their sound is defined by a commitment to lo-fi recording techniques, specifically utilizing cassette decks and older analog gear to achieve a signature dusty, saturated texture. Their 1998 debut, Stratosphere, is widely considered a masterpiece of the slowcore genre, blending the minimalist restraint of bands like Bedhead with the cosmic, psychedelic leanings of space rock. After a long hiatus beginning in 2000, the band experienced a massive cultural resurgence in the late 2010s and early 2020s, driven by internet communities and TikTok. This second life transformed them from a cult obscurity into a foundational influence for a new generation of indie and bedroom pop artists. Their work is characterized by a static dynamic range, whispered vocals, and a focus on atmosphere over traditional rock aggression.
