Eddie & the Hot Rods occupy a critical transitional space in UK music history, serving as the primary bridge between the pub rock scene of the early 70s and the punk revolution. Formed in Essex in 1975, they evolved from a high-energy R&B cover band into a powerhouse of original material that defined the 'pre-punk' sound. Their sound identity is characterized by Barrie Masters' raspy, urgent vocals and Dave Higgs' aggressive guitar work, often augmented by bluesy harmonica that feels more like a weapon than an accompaniment.
Though they toured with the Ramones and Talking Heads, they eventually found themselves 'too musical' for the hardcore punk crowd and 'too fast' for the old guard.
