Intro

Ekova sounds like a transmission from a culture that doesn't exist, but feels anciently familiar. It is a lush, liquid blend of North African percussion, mournful cello melodies, and subtle electronic pulses that ground the music in a late-night, downtempo headspace. The sound is deeply immersive, characterized by a sense of vast, open space and a shimmering, reverb-drenched production that makes every instrument feel like it is echoing through a marble hall.

What truly sets them apart is Dierdre Dubois's vocal approach. Rather than singing in a standard language, she utilizes a self-invented phonetic vocabulary that prioritizes the emotional weight of sound over literal meaning. This glossolalia, combined with her ability to shift between Celtic-inspired trills and Middle Eastern melisma, creates a bridge between disparate folk traditions and modern ambient techno. It is music that bypasses the analytical brain and speaks directly to the subconscious.

Start with 'Heaven's Dust' to experience their most cohesive vision. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who loves the atmospheric depth of Dead Can Dance but wants something with a slightly more rhythmic, electronic edge. It is music for deep focus, late-night reflection, or simply disappearing into a different world for an hour.

Ekova was a French-based musical trio, headed by American-born Dierdre Dubois, who originated the name. "Its roots are in echo, and ova, signifying the feminine side," she explains. "But it's not supposed to have a literal meaning, just a beautiful sound. I wanted a word I'd never heard before." Much of her vocalizations share the linguistic experimentalism/artistry of the group's name, with occasional Celtic, English, and Persian utterances floating in between largely nonsensical syllables, as well as influences from Irish and English folk music.
