Intro

El Da Sensei (William E. Williams) is a pillar of the New Jersey underground hip-hop scene, rising to prominence in the early 1990s as one half of the duo Artifacts alongside Tame One.

The duo is credited with formalizing the 'backpacker' subculture, bridging the gap between the golden age of hip-hop and the independent underground movement of the late 90s. Their 1994 debut, Between a Rock & a Hard Place, and the hit single 'Wrong Side of the Tracks' became anthems for graffiti writers globally. Following the group's amicable split after their second album, That's Them (1996), El Da Sensei transitioned into a prolific solo career characterized by international collaborations and a steadfast commitment to the boom bap aesthetic. His solo work, particularly the 2002 album Relax, Relate, Release, solidified his reputation as a technical lyricist who could maintain relevance across eras without compromising his purist roots. Critically, he is viewed as a 'rapper's rapper,' respected for his breath control, rhyme schemes, and ability to select production that evokes the gritty atmosphere of 1990s Newark and New York.
