Breath-close vocals floating over deep, resonant upright bass grooves. Minimalist Norwegian jazz that feels like a quiet conversation in a wooden room.
Ellen Andrea Wang creates a sound that is both physically grounding and spiritually light. Her music is centered around the woody, percussive thrum of her double bass, which she plays with a commanding sense of rhythm that never feels hurried. Over these thick, melodic bass lines, her voice arrives as a soft, breathy contrast, often singing simple, haunting melodies that bridge the gap between traditional jazz and modern indie-pop.
What makes her truly distinctive is the 'closeness' of her recordings. You can hear the fingers sliding on the strings and the intake of breath before a lyric, creating an intimacy that feels like she is performing just for you. She avoids the technical gymnastics often associated with jazz, opting instead for emotional clarity and a spaciousness that reflects her Norwegian roots. It is music that values the silence between the notes as much as the notes themselves.
Start with her album 'Closeness'. It perfectly captures her trio's chemistry and her ability to transform spirituals and pop covers into something deeply personal. It is the ideal entry point for anyone who loves the warmth of acoustic instruments but wants a modern, slightly experimental edge.
