Theatrical art-pop that blends circus-ready energy with smoky cabaret sophistication. Multilingual, violin-led anthems for nights that demand a little drama.
Ellen ten Damme is a whirlwind of theatrical energy, blending the precision of a gymnast with the soul of a rock star. Her sound is a lush, maximalist tapestry that weaves together elements of French chanson, German cabaret, and Dutch pop-rock. It is music that feels lived-in and worldly, yet possesses a sharp, modern edge that keeps it from ever feeling like a museum piece. Whether she is singing in English, Dutch, French, or German, there is a consistent sense of narrative drama and physical presence in every note.
What truly sets her apart is her multi-instrumental virtuosity, particularly her ability to integrate soaring violin lines into high-energy pop and rock arrangements. Her performances are famously athletic, often incorporating literal circus tricks and gymnastics, and that same sense of daring translates into her vocal delivery. She can pivot from a breathy, intimate whisper to a powerful, defiant belt in a single phrase, making her music feel like a series of vivid, three-minute plays.
For those new to her world, 'Durf Jij?' is an essential starting point for her Dutch-language mastery, showcasing her collaboration with poet Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer. If you prefer her more international, rock-oriented side, 'Impossible Girl' offers a glimpse into her high-concept art-pop sensibilities. For the full experience of her stage persona, the live album 'Berlin' captures the smoky, late-night atmosphere of her German-language repertoire perfectly.
Ellen ten Damme (born 7 October 1967) is a Dutch actress, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Ten Damme both sings and acts in four languages (Dutch, English, French and German), and plays piano and keyboards, guitar and violin. During her school years Ellen was an enthusiastic gymnast, and incorporating some gymnastic tricks or even circus acts into her shows has become a trademark. Ten Damme grew up in the rural village of Roden, close to the university town Groningen, where she studied Dutch for a while. However she switched to the Amsterdam Theatre School for stage, film, cabaret and musical actors. After spending a great deal of time in Germany, Ten Damme returned to Amsterdam, where she lives on a houseboat.
