Els Pets are the definitive survivors and evolvers of the 'Rock Català' movement that exploded in the late 1980s and early 90s. Originating from Constantí, they initially gained fame for a humorous, high-energy style they dubbed 'rock agrícola' (agricultural rock).
However, unlike their contemporaries, Els Pets underwent a significant stylistic maturation starting with the 1997 album 'Bondia,' which became one of the best-selling Catalan albums of all time. This era saw them embrace a more sophisticated pop-rock sound influenced by the Beatles, the Kinks, and contemporary power-pop. Their later work, particularly albums like 'Agost' and 'Fràgil,' solidified their reputation as the 'elder statesmen' of Catalan pop, characterized by Lluís Gavaldà's sharp, empathetic songwriting and high production values often overseen by American producer Brad Jones. They occupy a unique cultural space as a bridge between the rebellious rock of the post-Franco transition and the modern, polished indie-pop scene of 21st-century Catalonia.
