Haunting, forest-dwelling neofolk that feels like a 19th-century landscape painting. Intricate acoustic guitars and somber woodwinds for deep winter nights.
Empyrium is the primary creative vehicle for German multi-instrumentalist Markus Stock (Schwadorf). Formed in 1994, the project initially bridged the gap between symphonic doom metal and second-wave black metal aesthetics, though it quickly pivoted toward a highly influential form of dark neofolk.
Their early work is characterized by slow-tempo metal structures augmented by prominent synthesizers and operatic vocals. However, with 1999's 'Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays', they abandoned metal instrumentation for a purely acoustic, nature-centric sound. This transition solidified their place alongside acts like Ulver and Tenhi as pioneers of 'dark folk'. Stock's production work at his own Studio E has also shaped the sound of the European underground, but Empyrium remains his most personal and atmospheric output. Critically, they are regarded as masters of the 'forest aesthetic', moving beyond mere genre tropes to create a cohesive, pantheistic worldview. Their 2021 return, 'Über den Sternen', successfully synthesized their metal and folk eras, proving their enduring relevance in the dark music scene.
