Intro

English Dogs represent the exact moment where the mohawked energy of UK82 street punk realized it could play as fast and technical as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Their sound is a high-velocity collision of D-beat drumming and intricate, metallic guitar work that refuses to settle into a single lane. It is music that feels like a riot in a steel mill, balancing the raw, unpolished shouting of punk with the palm-muted precision of thrash.

What makes them distinctive is their evolution from the straightforward aggression of 'Invasion of the Porky Men' to the complex, almost progressive thrash structures of 'Forward Into Battle.' While their peers were content with three chords, English Dogs introduced technical solos and darker, more epic lyrical themes without losing their street-level grit. This duality created a 'crossover' sound that appealed to both the pit-dwelling punks and the denim-clad metalheads of the mid-80s.

Start with 'Forward Into Battle' if you want to hear the peak of their technical crossover prowess, or dive into 'Invasion of the Porky Men' for a masterclass in raw, unfiltered British hardcore. Both records capture a band that helped bridge the gap between two of the most aggressive subcultures in music history.

English Dogs were a British hardcore punk and heavy metal band formed in the early eighties. Two versions of the band existed: the punk and metal crossover band featuring original drummer Andrew "Pinch" Pinching and second-era members Graham "Gizz" Butt and Adie Bailey, and a punk-based one featuring original vocalist Pete "Wakey" Wakefield.
