Warped, sample-heavy collages that turn sonic trash into psychedelic treasure. Playful, gritty, and deeply rhythmic experimentalism for the curious ear.
Eric Copeland makes music that sounds like it was salvaged from a dumpster behind a 1980s toy factory. It is a dizzying array of primitive loops, pitch-shifted vocals, and rhythmic hiccups that somehow coalesce into something strangely catchy. The sound is undeniably lo-fi, characterized by a gritty, tape-saturated warmth that feels both nostalgic and alien. It is the sound of an artist playing with sound as if it were physical clay, stretching and squashing it into bizarre, colorful shapes.
What sets Copeland apart is his ability to find a groove within the chaos. While his work is firmly rooted in the noise and experimental scenes, there is a persistent, underlying pulse that keeps the listener grounded. He uses delay and repetition not just as effects, but as structural foundations, creating a hypnotic effect that mirrors the repetitive nature of early electronic dance music but filters it through a broken, psychedelic lens. His vocals are rarely clear, instead serving as another textural layer of rhythmic gibberish.
For those new to his catalog, Black Bubblegum offers a slightly more accessible, pop-adjacent entry point with its warped takes on traditional song structures. From there, diving into the murky, loop-driven depths of Alien in a Garbage Dump reveals the true heart of his aesthetic. It is music for people who enjoy the process of discovery, where every listen reveals a new hidden sound or a clever bit of sonic manipulation hidden beneath the surface.
