Intro

Esoteric creates music that feels like being slowly submerged in a dark, viscous liquid. It is funeral doom taken to its most psychedelic and expansive extreme, where songs frequently cross the fifteen-minute mark and tempos slow to a glacial crawl. The sound is defined by a crushing weight, but it is never flat; instead, it is filled with swirling, dissonant melodies and cavernous echoes that suggest a vast, terrifying space.

What sets them apart is their use of three guitarists to create complex, interlocking textures that owe as much to 70s space rock as they do to extreme metal. The vocals are often heavily processed, sounding less like a human voice and more like a tormented spirit crying out from the bottom of a well. It is an overwhelming sensory experience that demands total immersion.

Start with 'The Maniacal Vale' or 'A Pyrrhic Existence' to experience their modern, high-fidelity approach to sonic desolation. These albums showcase their ability to balance absolute crushing heaviness with moments of fragile, eerie beauty that reward the patient listener.

Esoteric is an English funeral doom metal band from Birmingham, founded in 1992. Releasing seven studio albums, and a demo, the band is widely regarded as among the first groups to develop the funeral doom style. The band has named a variety of groups as influences, such as metal bands Morbid Angel and My Dying Bride, more "trippy" artists such as Pink Floyd, Spacemen 3, and King Crimson, and the industrial and dark ambient genres.
