Ezra Furman

Scuzzy, high-energy rock and roll with a bleeding heart. It sounds like 1950s doo-wop filtered through a modern punk's restless, queer, and spiritual soul.

Intro

Ezra Furman creates music that feels like a desperate, joyful transmission from the edge of the world. It is a collision of vintage rock and roll aesthetics, 50s-style saxophone blasts, and a raw, shredded vocal delivery that sounds like it is tearing itself apart to tell you the truth. There is a frantic, jittery energy here that suggests everything is at stake in every single verse.

What makes her truly distinctive is the way she weaves together themes of queer identity, Jewish theology, and outsider angst without ever losing the hook. It is music that honors the history of rock - the grit of Lou Reed, the theatricality of Bowie, the earnestness of Springsteen - while sounding entirely contemporary and urgent. The production often balances a scuzzy, lo-fi basement feel with moments of cinematic, lush arrangement.

Start with 'Perpetual Motion People' to hear her at her most melodic and kaleidoscopic, or dive into 'Twelve Nudes' if you want the short, sharp shock of her punk side. For those who found her through 'Sex Education', her soundtrack work offers a more intimate, narrative-driven entry point into her expansive and deeply empathetic world.
