Intro

Feargal Sharkey’s music is the sound of high-stakes romanticism filtered through the pristine, neon-lit production of the mid-1980s. It is characterized by a shimmering, expensive-sounding sonic palette where gated drums and crystalline synthesizers provide a rigid structure for his wildly expressive voice. There is a specific tension between the mechanical precision of the backing tracks and the raw, human vulnerability of the performance.

What truly sets Sharkey apart is his unmistakable vocal delivery. He possesses a rapid-fire vibrato and a distinctive nasal quality that makes every line feel urgent and slightly fragile. While his peers in the New Wave scene often leaned into detached irony, Sharkey leaned into soul and melodrama, creating a bridge between the grit of his punk origins and the sophisticated pop charts of the era.

To understand his appeal, start with his self-titled 1985 debut. It captures the peak of his solo powers, moving from the chart-topping heartbreak of 'A Good Heart' to the more aggressive, driving energy of 'You Little Thief.' It is essential listening for anyone who loves the intersection of blue-eyed soul and 80s synth-rock.

Seán Feargal Sharkey (born 13 August 1958) is a singer, and environmentalist from Derry, Northern Ireland. He was the lead vocalist of the punk band the Undertones in the 1970s and 1980s, and became a solo artist in the 1980s and 1990s. His 1985 solo single "A Good Heart" was a number-one hit in the United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, Ireland, and the Netherlands. After becoming less musically active in the early 1990s, he has performed various roles supporting the UK's commercial music industry, winning several awards and honours for his work in that area. Sharkey is also a lifelong fly fisherman, and has campaigned against the pollution of British rivers (particularly chalk streams). He is also the Chairman of the Amwell Magna Fishery. He has become a figurehead for the campaign to prevent water companies dumping sewage into UK waterways and coasts.
