Intro

Fernanda Porto is the architect of a very specific, high-energy serenity. Her music lives in the intersection of traditional Brazilian MPB and the frantic, liquid energy of London-born drum and bass. It is music that feels both deeply rooted in the soil of Brazil and perfectly at home in a sleek, glass-walled apartment in a global metropolis. The contrast is the point: the frantic 170 BPM skitter of the drums serves as a pedestal for her calm, breathy vocals and the warm, organic chords of an acoustic guitar.

What makes her distinctive is the 'Sambass' aesthetic. While many electronic artists sample Brazilian music, Porto approaches it as a songwriter first. She doesn't just loop a bossa nova record; she composes within the genre and then accelerates the heartbeat of the track. The result is a sound that feels aerodynamic and modern, yet retains the emotional complexity and 'saudade' of classic samba. It is sophisticated without being cold, and energetic without being aggressive.

Start with her self-titled 2002 debut. It is the definitive document of the Sambass movement, featuring the iconic 'Sambassim.' It’s the perfect entry point for anyone who loves the melodicism of Bebel Gilberto but wants the rhythmic drive of a late-night club set.

Fernanda Porto, or Maria Fernanda Dutra Clemente (Serra Negra, Brazil, December 31, 1965), is a Brazilian drum 'n' bossa singer. Drum 'n' bossa is a combination of electronic music, bossa nova and drum 'n' bass. Along with DJ Patife, her song "Sambassim" became popular in Brazil and many countries in Europe. DJ Marky later remixed it. Another song remixed was "Só Tinha Ser Com Você". She has also worked with American pop music producer Mark Holiday from Miami (also known as Trendsetter).
