Aggressive black metal meets the frantic bounce of Finnish polka. A chaotic, accordion-heavy forest romp that feels like a troll raid on a village festival.
Finntroll is a cornerstone of the Finnish folk metal scene, founded in 1997 by Teemu 'Somnium' Raimoranta and Jan 'Katla' Jämsen. Their primary innovation was the integration of 'humppa' - a traditional Finnish dance music related to polka - into the framework of extreme metal.
While their peers often leaned into symphonic or power metal influences, Finntroll maintained a grittier, blackened edge influenced by the early Norwegian scene. A defining characteristic is their use of Swedish lyrics, chosen by Katla to evoke a more 'trollish' and ancient sound, a tradition maintained through multiple lineup changes. The band's narrative focus on the fictional Troll-King Rivfader and his war against Christian missionaries provides a cohesive conceptual framework. Despite the tragic death of founder Somnium in 2003, the band has remained prolific, evolving from the raw, lo-fi sounds of 'Midnattens widunder' to the more cinematic and orchestrated 'Vredesvävd'. They are widely credited with spawning a sub-genre of 'troll metal' and remain a major draw in the international metal festival circuit.
