Intro

Floater sounds like the dark, damp heart of the Pacific Northwest. Their music is built on a foundation of thick, melodic bass lines and intricate drumming that often leans into tribal or psychedelic territories. It is rock music that isn't afraid to be quiet, often simmering in a low-boil tension before erupting into massive, distorted peaks. The vocals anchor everything with a rich baritone that can shift from a gentle, folk-like croon to a visceral, desperate roar in a single breath.

What truly sets them apart is their commitment to the concept album and the art of the long-form narrative. While their peers in the 90s were chasing radio singles, Floater was constructing elaborate sonic journeys filled with recurring themes and surreal imagery. There is a specific 'heaviness' here that isn't just about volume; it's a weight of atmosphere and emotion, blending the grit of grunge with the structural ambition of progressive rock.

Start with 'Glyph' to hear them at their most iconic and balanced, or dive into 'Angels in the Flesh and Devils in the Bone' if you want to experience their full conceptual depth. For those who prefer the raw, intimate side of their songwriting, their 'Acoustics' work reveals the skeletal beauty hidden beneath their usual wall of sound.

Floater is an American rock band based in Portland, Oregon. The band was started in 1993 by Robert Wynia, along with Peter Cornett and David Amador. They are known for their progressive concept albums, stylized storytelling, intense live performances, and devoted fanbase. The band was a musical guest for Live Wire Radio on OPB radio. The band was voted the "Best Band" in the Willamette Week "Best of Portland" reader's poll for 2009 and 2010.
