FORMA

FORMA is a Brooklyn-based ensemble that has become a cornerstone of the modern kosmische and experimental electronic scene. Formed in 2010, the group originally operated as a trio focused on the improvisational possibilities of analog synthesizers, drawing heavy influence from 1970s German pioneers like Tangerine Dream and Manuel Göttsching.

Their early releases on Spectrum Spools established them as masters of the 'motorik' pulse, using hardware sequencers to create dense, shimmering walls of sound. The departure of founding member Sophie Lam and the addition of John Also Bennett marked a significant shift in their sonic identity. This transition culminated in the 2016 album 'Physicalist' on the Kranky label, which saw the band move beyond pure synthesis to incorporate piano, flute, and acoustic textures. This move aligned them with the modern classical and ambient movements while maintaining their rhythmic techno roots. Critically, they are praised for their ability to make hardware-based music feel emotionally resonant and fluid rather than cold or mechanical.
