Brittle, lo-fi synth-pop that feels like a shared secret. Raw emotional vulnerability meeting cold, skeletal electronics for late-night introspection.
Former Ghosts sounds like the physical manifestation of a heavy heart. It is music built from the wreckage of relationships, utilizing cheap synthesizers and skeletal drum machine patterns to create a space that is simultaneously claustrophobic and deeply intimate. The production is intentionally unpolished, favoring the emotional truth of a first take over the sterile perfection of a studio, resulting in a sound that feels like a dusty cassette tape found in an attic.
What truly distinguishes this project is its collaborative nature. Freddy Ruppert acts as a lightning rod for a specific circle of avant-pop luminaries, bringing in the operatic intensity of Zola Jesus and the frantic, jagged energy of Jamie Stewart. These voices are layered over brittle electronic textures, creating a contrast between the warmth of human desperation and the cold indifference of the machines providing the rhythm.
If you are new to this sound, start with the debut album Fleurs. It captures the project at its most essential, balancing melodic synth-pop sensibilities with a crushing sense of gloom. It is not an easy listen, but for those who find beauty in the darker corners of the human experience, it is a deeply rewarding one.
Former Ghosts is a project of Freddy Ruppert, former member of This Song Is a Mess But So Am I, with loose collaborations from multiple people including Xiu Xiu frontperson Jamie Stewart, Zola Jesus originator Nika Roza Danilova, Yasmine Kittles of Tearist, Annie Lewandowski of Powerdove, and Carla Bozulich. Past live incarnations have included Jherek Bischoff and Sam Mickens. Ruppert is the lead songwriter on this project. The title of the debut, Fleurs, is a reference to the white-flowered iris (Iris germanica).
