Large-scale choral arrangements meet big band swing. Meticulously harmonized, wholesome, and deeply nostalgic music for holiday mornings and family gatherings.
Listening to Fred Waring & His Pennsylvanians is like stepping into a technicolor musical from the 1940s. The sound is defined by an immense, disciplined wall of voices that moves with the precision of a marching band but the grace of a ballroom orchestra. It is unapologetically grand, often leaning into a 'schmaltzy' sentimentality that feels both comforting and historically significant.
What truly sets Waring apart is his obsession with choral technique. While other big bands focused on instrumental soloists, Waring treated the human voice as a flexible, multi-layered instrument. You will hear crisp enunciation, dramatic dynamic shifts, and a unique 'glee club' energy that bridges the gap between collegiate fun and professional radio polish. It is the sound of an era that valued collective harmony over individual grit.
Start with their holiday recordings or the 'In Hi-Fi' sessions. These tracks showcase the group's ability to take standard American tunes and elevate them into cinematic, multi-part vocal experiences. It is perfect for moments that require a sense of tradition, warmth, and a touch of mid-century optimism.
Waring's Pennsylvanians was a dance band founded at Penn State University by Fred Waring. First named the Collegians, the group was formed in 1918 at Penn State by the brothers Fred and Tom Waring and their friends Freddy Buck and Poley McClintock. They had a hit in 1925 with the song "Collegiate". Other popular novelty songs were "I've Never Seen a Straight Banana" and "I Wonder How I Look When I'm Asleep". In 1929 they appeared in the movie Syncopation and on stage in The New Yorkers the following year. Their popularity increased in the 1930s with their presence in radio and movies. During the 1940s, they performed on Broadway and at the World's Fair and became the first band to broadcast its own TV show. From 1950 to 1970, they became a corporation that branched into workshops, real estate, and a magazine.
