Formed in 2000 in Long Island, From Autumn to Ashes (FATA) became a cornerstone of the post-hardcore and metalcore explosion of the early 2000s. Their identity was initially forged through the 'beauty and the beast' vocal dynamic between Benjamin Perri's harsh screams and Francis Mark's melodic clean vocals.
Uniquely, Mark also served as the band's drummer during their formative years, a rare configuration that influenced the rhythmic complexity of their melodic sections. Their debut, 'Too Bad You're Beautiful', is cited as a foundational text for the 'screamo' and metalcore crossover, blending technical hardcore riffs with poetic, often theatrical lyricism. As the band evolved, they leaned into more experimental structures, incorporating piano and more nuanced production on 'The Fiction We Live'. Following Perri's departure, Mark took over all vocal duties, shifting the sound toward a more direct, aggressive post-hardcore style on 'Holding a Wolf by the Ears'. They remain a vital reference point for the evolution of the New York hardcore scene into the mainstream emo-core movement.
