Fruit Bats

Fruit Bats is the primary creative vehicle for Eric D. Johnson, a musician whose career spans the Chicago indie-rock boom of the late 90s to the modern Americana revival.

Formed in 1997, the project originally emerged from the same creative circle as Califone and Modest Mouse. Johnson's sound is a unique synthesis of 70s AM radio pop, Grateful Dead-inspired melodicism, and indie-folk intimacy. His tenure as a member of The Shins significantly influenced his approach to pop structure, while his work with Bonny Light Horseman highlights his deep roots in traditional folk. Critically, Fruit Bats are regarded as masters of the 'vibe' album, consistently delivering records that evoke specific temporal and geographic sensations, particularly the American West and Midwest. The project underwent a brief hiatus in the mid-2010s before returning with a more expansive, hi-fi sound that incorporated elements of soft rock and boogie.
