High-voltage Norwegian folk that fuses traditional kveding vocals with heavy rock and industrial synths. Cinematic, primal, and fiercely powerful.
Gåte sounds like a collision between ancient mountain spirits and a modern industrial plant. It is music that feels rooted in the soil of Trøndelag but projected through a massive wall of amplifiers. The core of their sound is the interplay between the traditional Hardanger fiddle and jagged, heavy guitar riffs, all anchored by a rhythm section that leans into the driving energy of progressive rock.
What truly sets them apart is Gunnhild Sundli's vocal performance. She utilizes the traditional Norwegian 'kveding' style, a folk singing technique characterized by microtonal ornaments and a specific chest-voice resonance, but she delivers it with the power of a metal frontwoman. This creates a unique tension where the music feels both centuries old and startlingly futuristic, bridging the gap between rural folklore and urban grit.
Start with the album Iselilja to hear them at their most iconic. It perfectly captures their ability to turn delicate folk melodies into stadium-sized anthems. If you want something more recent and aggressive, their 2024 Eurovision entry Ulveham showcases how they have refined their dark, pagan-influenced rock for a modern global stage.
Gåte (pronounced [ˈɡôːtə]; Norwegian for 'riddle') is a band from Trøndelag, Norway playing Norwegian folk music bred with metal and electronica. Their style has been referred to as progressive folk-rock. The band was put together by Sveinung Sundli (violin, keyboards) in 2000 and originally consisted of his younger sister Gunnhild Sundli (vocals), Gjermund Landrø (bass, backing vocals), Martin Langlie (drums) and Magnus Børmark (guitar, keyboards). Langlie was replaced by Kenneth Kapstad in 2004. They represented Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 with the song "Ulveham".
