Giants in the Trees

Earthy, Pacific Northwest rock that smells like pine needles and river mud. Melodic bass meets accordion and slide guitar for a grounded, psychedelic experience.

Intro

This is music that feels deeply rooted in the soil of the Pacific Northwest, specifically the damp, moss-covered corners of Wahkiakum County. It avoids the polished sheen of city studios in favor of a sound that feels like it was captured in a historic community hall. The interplay between traditional folk instruments and electric rock creates a texture that is simultaneously familiar and slightly otherworldly, like a local legend whispered in a dive bar.

What truly sets them apart is the rhythmic foundation. You can hear the unmistakable melodic weight of Krist Novoselic's bass, but here it is paired with accordion and lap steel rather than grunge distortion. Jillian Raye's vocals provide a haunting, airy contrast to the heavy, grounded instrumentation, creating a 'tall trees' aesthetic that feels both spacious and dense.

Start with their self-titled debut to hear the band finding their footing in the Skamokawa Grange. It is the perfect companion for a long drive through the woods or a quiet evening by a fire where the conversation has drifted into comfortable silence.

Giants in the Trees was an American rock band formed in Wahkiakum County, Washington, in 2017. The band was formed by former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, who created the band as a local musical project. Novoselic, Jillian Raye, Erik Friend, and Ray Prestegard were the current band members of Giants in the Trees, until 2020. Often, Jennifer Johnson joins on vocals.
