Gilla Band, formerly known as Girl Band, is a seminal force in the modern Irish noise rock and post-punk scene. Formed in Dublin in 2011, the quartet - comprising Dara Kiely, Alan Duggan, Daniel Fox, and Adam Faulkner - redefined the boundaries of guitar music by incorporating the structural logic of techno and industrial music.
Their sound is characterized by Duggan's 'anti-guitar' approach, using a vast array of effects to mimic synthesizers and industrial machinery, and Kiely's abstract, often harrowing lyrical explorations of mental health and mundane absurdity. Their debut, 'Holding Hands With Jamie' (2015), established them as critical darlings, noted for its 'unbroken series of thumping, crashing songs.' Following a hiatus due to Kiely's health, they returned with 'The Talkies' (2019), recorded in a manor house to utilize its specific acoustic 'dead zones,' and 'Most Normal' (2022), which pushed their production into even more surreal, hip-hop influenced territory. They are widely cited as a primary influence on the 'Crank Wave' movement and the current explosion of abrasive Irish post-punk.
