Glenn Hughes

High-octane hard rock infused with the grit of Memphis soul. A masterclass in vocal range and funky bass grooves that bridge the gap between metal and Motown.

Intro

Glenn Hughes delivers a sound that is fundamentally muscular yet surprisingly fluid. It is the sound of 1970s arena rock filtered through a deep, abiding love for American R&B. You get the heavy, distorted riffs and thunderous drums expected of a Deep Purple alum, but they are consistently punctuated by syncopated bass lines and a vocal elasticity that most rock singers can only dream of. It feels like a high-speed chase in a classic muscle car: powerful, loud, and expertly tuned.

What truly sets Hughes apart is his 'Voice of Rock' persona, which isn't just a marketing tag but a literal description of his capability. He possesses a four-octave range that allows him to transition from a gritty, bluesy growl to a crystalline falsetto in a single breath. This soul-infusion into the hard rock template creates a 'funk-rock' hybrid that feels more danceable than traditional heavy metal while remaining undeniably heavy.

For those new to his massive catalog, start with the 1974 Deep Purple classic 'Burn' to hear his dual-vocal chemistry with David Coverdale, then move to his solo work like 'Addiction' for a heavier, more personal modern sound. If you want the pure funk-rock essence, his work with Trapeze or the 'Stormbringer' era of Purple captures his most distinctive stylistic fingerprints.

Glenn Hughes (born 21 August 1951) is an English musician, best known as the bassist and singer in the hard rock band Trapeze and in the Mk. III and IV line-ups of Deep Purple, as well as briefly fronting Black Sabbath in the mid-1980s. In addition to being an active session musician, Hughes maintains a notable solo career. He fronts the supergroup Black Country Communion, and fronted California Breed from 2013 to 2015 and The Dead Daisies from 2019 to 2023. In 2016, Hughes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Deep Purple.
