Intro

Glorious Din was a pivotal, if cult-status, fixture of the 1980s San Francisco post-punk and gothic rock scene. Formed around vocalist Eric Cope and guitarist Paget, the band distinguished themselves from their UK contemporaries (like Joy Division or early Cure) through a heavier emphasis on tribal percussion and a 'submerged' production aesthetic.

Their debut, 'Leading Stolen Horses' (1985), was co-produced by Matt Wallace and is noted for its use of a metal barrel as a percussion instrument, adding a clanging, industrial edge to their rhythmic darkwave sound. Their second album, 'Closely Watched Trains' (1987), saw the band lean further into atmospheric, almost cinematic textures before their dissolution. Critically, they are regarded as a bridge between the aggressive deathrock of Southern California and the more intellectual, art-damaged post-punk of the North. Their influence persists primarily in 'crate-digger' circles and among fans of obscure 80s darkwave, where they are celebrated for their unique ability to balance driving energy with a suffocating, reverb-drenched atmosphere.
