Grand Buffet

High-energy absurdist rap fueled by cheap synths and surrealist wit. It is the sound of a very smart, very strange basement party in 2004.

Intro

Grand Buffet sounds like a fever dream occurring inside a thrift store electronics section. Their music is built on a foundation of chunky, often primitive drum machine beats and bright, buzzy synthesizer melodies that feel intentionally unpolished. Over these DIY soundscapes, the duo delivers intricate, rapid-fire verses that pivot from mundane observations to cosmic absurdity without warning. It is hip-hop that refuses to take itself seriously while being technically proficient enough to command respect.

What truly sets them apart is their commitment to a specific brand of irony that never feels cynical. There is a genuine warmth and nostalgia buried under the layers of satire and the bizarre stage personas. They occupy a unique space between the underground rap scene and the indie-rock circuit, possessing a punk-rock ethos that prioritizes personality and performance over industry polish. Their songs often feel like inside jokes that you are being invited to join, provided you can keep up with the references.

Start with the compilation 'Five Years of Fireworks' to get a full spectrum of their evolution. It captures the transition from their raw early recordings to the more melodic, synth-heavy anthems that defined their peak. Tracks like 'Benjamin' and 'Cool as Hell' showcase their ability to craft infectious hooks out of the most unlikely subject matter, making them the perfect entry point for the uninitiated.

Grand Buffet is an American hip-hop duo from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, consisting of Jackson O’Connell-Barlow and Jarrod Weeks. Their music blends hip hop, funk, and experimental elements, often featuring satire and absurdist humor. Throughout the group’s career, both members have used multiple stage names, often changing aliases between releases. Grand Buffet has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe. In 2005, the duo completed a European tour with Sage Francis, followed by a U.S. tour with Of Montreal and MGMT in 2006. The group later toured with Girl Talk in 2008 and Third Eye Blind in 2009. The duo has also shared stages with artists including Streetlight Manifesto, MC Lars, Sole, Cex, Magnolia Electric Co., Gil Mantera's Party Dream, and the late Wesley Willis.
