Intro

Greg Davis creates a sound that feels like a high-resolution photograph of a forest floor. It is deeply rooted in the physical world, utilizing acoustic guitars, gongs, and even pine cones, but everything is viewed through the prism of digital processing. The result is a shimmering, kaleidoscopic form of ambient music that is both warm and intellectually stimulating, avoiding the coldness often associated with laptop composition.

What sets Davis apart is his 'folktronica' sensibility, particularly on seminal albums like Arbor. He doesn't just use electronics to create drones; he uses them to fracture and rearrange traditional folk instrumentation into something new. There is a tactile, 'dusty' quality to his work that suggests a deep reverence for the materials he uses, whether they are physical instruments or field recordings of the Vermont landscape.

Start with Arbor for the definitive blend of acoustic warmth and digital glitch. It serves as a perfect gateway into his world of deep listening. From there, move to Curling Pond Woods for a more immersive, nature-focused experience that highlights his ability to turn environmental sounds into melodic tapestries.

Gregory Tyler Davis is an American electronic musician who has recorded albums drawing from a wide variety of sources, including guitar, field recording, various world/ethnic/traditional instruments, percussion, and voice, all processed through digital manipulation. After years of experience in hip-hop groups, jazz combos, free improvisation, and experimental composition, Davis moved toward computer-based music in 1997. At Depaul University in Chicago, he studied classical and jazz guitar alongside composition and jazz studies. In 2017, Davis opened Autumn Records in Winooski, VT.
