Intro

Gretchen is the undisputed queen of Brazilian camp, delivering a sound that is as much about physical movement as it is about the music. Her tracks are built on a foundation of driving disco beats, shimmering 80s synths, and a vocal style that favors breathy, rhythmic chanting over traditional melodic complexity. It is music that demands your attention and your participation, radiating a sense of uninhibited joy and theatrical confidence.

What truly sets her apart is the sheer iconic nature of her hooks. Songs like 'Conga Conga Conga' and 'Freak Le Boom Boom' utilize repetitive, almost hypnotic syllables that transcend language barriers. Her work bridges the gap between classic Latin disco and the modern internet era, where her expressive persona has found a second life as a global meme phenomenon. There is a raw, unapologetic energy here that feels both vintage and strangely timeless.

For the uninitiated, 'My Name Is Gretchen' is the essential starting point. It captures her at the peak of her 1980s powers, offering a masterclass in how to command a room with nothing but a drum machine and a lot of attitude. It is the perfect soundtrack for anyone looking to inject some high-drama, high-energy fun into their day.

Maria Odete Brito de Miranda de Souza (born 29 May 1959), known professionally as Gretchen, is a Brazilian singer and media personality. Gretchen is the older sister of Brazilian country singer Sula Miranda, and mother of Brazilian politician Thammy Miranda. She is known for reinventing her music and image, and for keeping her autonomy within the music industry. She has a vast musical repertory, and has been the source of some controversy throughout her career. Referred to as the "Rainha do Bumbum" ("Hips Queen"), Gretchen has sold 15 million records over nearly four decades. Her professional name was inspired by the Brazilian movie Aleluia, Gretchen, which tells the story of a German Brazilian immigrant family.
