Polished, conversational indie pop with a choir-trained ear for harmony. Bright, lush songs for long drives and big life transitions.
Gretta Ray makes music that feels like the exact moment the sun hits the dashboard during a long drive. It is bright, expansive, and deeply melodic, rooted in a sophisticated understanding of vocal harmony that betrays her background in professional choirs. While her early work leaned into the earthy textures of indie folk, her more recent output embraces a 'quietly grand' pop aesthetic that is both shiny and emotionally grounded.
What sets her apart is the conversational intimacy of her songwriting. She writes lyrics that feel like a voice note from a very articulate friend, detailing the specific anxieties and small triumphs of early adulthood. There is a rhythmic fluidity to her phrasing that makes even her most produced pop tracks feel human and lived-in, often punctuated by lush string arrangements or stacked vocal layers that elevate the songs into something cinematic.
Start with 'Drive' to hear the folk-inflected breakthrough that put her on the map, then move to 'Positive Spin' for a masterclass in modern Australian pop. It is the perfect soundtrack for anyone navigating the messy, beautiful transition from their teens into their twenties.
Gretta Louise Ray (born 22 May 1998) is an Australian singer-songwriter from Melbourne, Victoria. In 2016, she was the winner of the national Triple J Unearthed radio competition for bands and songwriters, and the 2016 Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition, with her song "Drive". To date, Ray has released two studio albums – Begin to Look Around (2021) and Positive Spin (2023) – as well as the EPs Elsewhere (2016) and Here and Now (2018). Originally making music reflective of indie folk influences, Ray came to embrace pop music as her primary genre with Begin to Look Around. Her songwriting has been described by the Sydney Morning Herald as "conversational, unambiguous lyrics" that "[come] across simply and powerfully", and by Australian music critic Bernard Zuel as "quietly grand pop".
