Guess Who (Laurențiu Mocanu) is a pivotal figure in the 'new wave' of Romanian hip-hop that emerged in the late 2000s. Originally a member of the group Anonim, his solo career redefined the genre's commercial potential in Romania.
His 2009 debut solo album, 'Probe Audio', was a landmark release that utilized the internet for independent distribution before being picked up by major labels. His sound identity is built on a foundation of boom bap and conscious rap, but evolved to include pop-rap and R&B elements that secured massive radio airplay. G. Mafia or Cheloo. As a key member of the Okapi Sound collective, he helped professionalize the Romanian rap scene, moving it from lo-fi bedroom recordings to high-fidelity studio productions. His cultural position is that of a relatable observer, articulating the frustrations and aspirations of the post-1989 generation.
