Gunplay

High-velocity street rap with a gravelly, unhinged energy. Intense Florida trap that feels like a high-speed chase through a humid midnight.

Intro

Gunplay sounds like a pressure cooker finally blowing its lid. His music is defined by a frantic, almost desperate energy that separates him from the more composed, luxury-focused peers in the Maybach Music Group camp. While his mentor Rick Ross projects an image of calm authority, Gunplay sounds like he is fighting for his life on every bar, utilizing a raspy, high-decibel delivery that borders on a controlled scream.

What makes him distinctive is the sheer unpredictability of his flow. He often pivots from dense, technical double-time rapping to jagged, rhythmic shouting, all while maintaining a gritty Florida street aesthetic. His production choices favor heavy, distorted 808s and ominous synth melodies that provide a cinematic backdrop for his vivid, often dark narratives of street life and personal struggle.

To understand the appeal, start with the mixtape 601 & Snort or his standout verse on Kendrick Lamar's 'Cartoon & Cereal.' These tracks showcase his ability to inject a sense of genuine danger and chaotic charisma into traditional trap structures, making him a favorite for listeners who crave high-intensity, unfiltered rap.

Richard Welton Morales Jr. (born July 18, 1979), better known by his stage name Gunplay, is an American rapper known for his association with fellow rapper Rick Ross, with whom he formed the hip hop group Triple C's in 2005, along with rappers Torch and Young Breed. Following their debut album, Custom Cars & Cycles (2009), Morales signed a solo recording contract with Ross' Maybach Music Group, which entered a joint venture with Def Jam Recordings in July 2012. His debut studio album, Living Legend (2015), narrowly entered the Billboard 200 and served as his only release on a major label.
