Half Dub Theory is a Russian electronic trio formed in 2006, consisting of vocalist Marina Skalozub, guitarist Max Kubbe, and electronic producer Andrey Bolshakov. Emerging from the vibrant St.

Petersburg scene, they became one of the most prominent Russian exports of the 'second wave' of trip-hop. Their sound identity is a sophisticated blend of downtempo, dub, and glitch, heavily influenced by the 1990s Bristol sound of Massive Attack and Portishead, yet distinguished by a more modern, digital-glitch aesthetic and a specific 'Northern' coldness. Throughout their career, they have evolved from a more traditional soul-influenced trip-hop on early releases like Soulplay to a more experimental, textured approach on Floating and Value. They have achieved significant critical respect within the global downtempo community, evidenced by their festival appearances alongside genre icons like Massive Attack and Robin Guthrie. Their work is characterized by high production values, utilizing tape saturation and heavy reverb to create a sense of vast, lonely space.
