Hardline formed in 1991 as a vehicle for the Gioeli brothers, quickly evolving into a supergroup with the addition of Neal Schon and Deen Castronovo. Their 1992 debut, Double Eclipse, arrived at the tail end of the melodic rock boom, earning critical acclaim for its sophisticated arrangements and Johnny Gioeli's exceptional vocal range.
Despite the rise of grunge, the album maintained a cult following and is now cited as a classic of the AOR/Hard Rock genre. The band's sound is defined by a 'harder edge' than contemporaries like Bad English, utilizing more aggressive guitar tones and complex drumming while maintaining radio-ready melodies. Following a long hiatus, Johnny Gioeli revived the project in the 2000s, shifting toward a more contemporary European melodic metal influence while retaining the core American hard rock identity. The band remains a staple of the Frontiers Music scene, representing the bridge between 80s arena ambition and modern technical rock production.
