Haze is a cornerstone of the Sheffield progressive rock scene, formed in 1978 by brothers Chris and Danny McMahon. While they emerged during the height of punk and the subsequent New Wave, Haze maintained a steadfast commitment to the complex structures and mythological themes of 1970s progressive rock, albeit with a leaner, more aggressive edge.
Their sound identity is built on a foundation of dual-instrumental prowess, featuring prominent keyboard-guitar unisons and a rhythm section that frequently employs odd time signatures without sacrificing groove. Throughout the 1980s, they operated largely within the UK's 'neo-prog' circuit alongside bands like Marillion and Pendragon, though Haze often exhibited a more eclectic, folk-influenced palette. Despite several hiatuses, the band has maintained a remarkably loyal cult following, evidenced by their frequent anniversary shows and a late-career resurgence with 2020's 'Back To The Bones'.
