Formed in Champaign, Illinois in 2004 from the ashes of Absinthe Blind, Headlights became a cornerstone of the Polyvinyl Records roster during the mid-to-late 2000s. Their sound is a sophisticated evolution of the 'Midwestern' indie aesthetic, trading the jagged edges of emo for the lush, melodic sensibilities of chamber pop and dream pop.
The band's identity is anchored by the dual-vocal attack of Erin Fein and Tristan Wraight, whose harmonies draw comparisons to Mates of State but with a more atmospheric, guitar-driven foundation. Their career arc saw them move from the raw, energetic indie rock of 'Kill Them With Kindness' (2006) toward the more expansive, synth-heavy textures of 'Wildlife' (2009). Critically, they were often grouped with the 'indie-pop' explosion of the era, though they maintained a distinct identity through their use of analog textures and a persistent, underlying wistfulness. The inclusion of Nick Sanborn (later of Sylvan Esso) added a rhythmic and electronic sophistication to their later work. They disbanded in 2012, leaving behind a catalog that serves as a high-water mark for the intersection of indie rock and melodic pop.
