Headrillaz

Headrillaz emerged from the fertile South London electronic scene of the mid-1990s, formed by brothers Casper and Saul Kedros alongside Darius Kedros. Initially evolving from the acid-jazz project Slowly and experimental outfits like Tranquil Elephantizer, the group found their definitive voice under the mentorship of Howie B, who signed them to his Pussyfoot label.

Their sound identity is defined by a 'caustic' fusion of big beat, trip-hop, and techno, characterized by heavy compression and rock-influenced sampling. Unlike the more polished big beat of Fatboy Slim, Headrillaz maintained a gritty, 'street' aesthetic that aligned them with acts like Monkey Mafia and Deejay Punk-Roc. Their 1997 debut 'Coldharbour Rocks' remains a seminal document of the era's breakbeat culture. Critically, they were praised for bringing a live-band intensity to electronic music, often performing with a full ensemble at major festivals like Glastonbury. Their influence persists in the lineage of aggressive UK breakbeat and the 'industrial' end of downtempo music.
