Formed in 1974 in Kitchener, Ontario, Helix evolved from a bar-circuit cover act into one of Canada's most enduring hard rock exports. Led by the singular presence of vocalist Brian Vollmer, the band hit their commercial and creative stride in the mid-1980s after signing with Capitol Records.
Their sound is characterized by a fusion of AC/DC-style rhythmic simplicity and the melodic sensibilities of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. The 1984 album 'Walkin' the Razor's Edge' solidified their status, propelled by the massive success of the single 'Rock You', which became a cultural touchstone for anthemic rock. Throughout the decade, they shared stages with giants like Kiss and Mötley Crüe, maintaining a reputation for high-intensity live performances. Despite tragic lineup changes, including the death of guitarist Paul Hackman in 1992, Vollmer has steered the band through five decades of activity. Critically, they are regarded as masters of the 'fist-pumping anthem', bridging the gap between traditional heavy metal and the more commercial hair metal era while retaining a rugged, unpretentious identity.
