Heorot

Heorot is a Finnish Viking and Pagan metal entity formed in 2002 in Mäntyharju. Led by Teemu 'Modsognir' Ollikainen, the band emerged during the peak of the second wave of folk metal, though they eschewed the polished, keyboard-heavy 'humppa' style common in Finland for a more guitar-driven, aggressive approach.

Their sound identity is defined by a blend of melodic death metal riffing and traditional folk structures, often utilizing the 'Viking' aesthetic to explore themes of Norse mythology and nature. Their debut full-length, Ragnarök (2007), remains their most significant contribution to the underground scene, characterized by its raw production and earnest atmosphere. Historically, they represent the transition of Finnish folk metal from a niche experimental crossover into a defined subgenre. While they never achieved the commercial heights of peers like Ensiferum or Korpiklaani, they are highly regarded in underground circles for maintaining a more 'pagan' and less 'pop' sensibility. Their influence is felt primarily within the European pagan metal circuit where authenticity and atmosphere are prioritized over technical polish.
