Heterotic

Heterotic is the collaborative project of Mike Paradinas (founder of the influential Planet Mu label and the producer known as µ-Ziq) and his wife, Lara Rix-Martin. Formed in the early 2010s, the duo represents a significant departure from the intricate, often frenetic IDM and drill 'n' bass styles Paradinas helped pioneer.

Instead, Heterotic explores a more restrained, song-oriented aesthetic that draws heavily from early 90s house, synth-pop, and downtempo. Their sound identity is defined by the use of vintage hardware, resulting in a warm, saturated sonic palette that avoids the clinical precision of modern digital production. The project gained critical attention for its collaborations with vocalists like Gravenhurst's Nick Talbot, whose haunting delivery complemented the duo's melancholic arrangements. Culturally, Heterotic fits into the 'hauntological' or nostalgic electronic movement, though they maintain a more direct connection to soul and pop structures than many of their peers. Their work is characterized by a bittersweet emotional core, often described by critics as 'electronic soul' for the post-club generation.
