Spectral, nocturnal soundscapes where piano and voice dissolve into tape hiss. A murky, beautiful descent into solitude for fans of Grouper and Midwife.
Listening to Hilary Woods feels like being submerged in a dark, still lake where the surface is just out of reach. The music is defined by a profound sense of space and shadow, utilizing heavy reverb and analog decay to create a world that feels both ancient and deeply personal. It is a slow, deliberate crawl through the subconscious, where every piano note carries the weight of a secret and every vocal line is a ghost of a thought.
What truly distinguishes Woods is her ability to make silence feel heavy. Unlike traditional ambient music that aims to blend into the background, her work demands a quiet, focused presence. She uses the artifacts of recording - tape hiss, room tone, and the physical click of a piano key - as essential instruments. This tactile, 'dusty' quality gives her music a physical presence that feels like a shared intimacy between the listener and the artist.
For those new to her catalog, 'Colt' is the essential starting point. It perfectly balances her singer-songwriter roots with her more experimental, textural leanings. From there, move to 'Birthmarks' for a deeper dive into the visceral, industrial-tinged drones that have come to define her more recent, more challenging output.
Hilary Woods is an Irish musician born in Dublin. She is a solo artist, previously a member of the alternative rock band JJ72, with which she played bass guitar from 1996 until 2003. JJ72 had success with two Top 20 albums in the early 2000s with Woods as the bassist. She quit the music industry until 2013, returning with her first solo album, The River Cry, and the EP Night the following year. Woods' solo albums have a gentle, ambient folk sound with "nocturnal keyboard-based songs". Her musical inspiration comes from filmmakers, electronic artists, experimental noise, and folk music traditions. She is currently signed to Sacred Bones Records and has released 5 albums and 3 EPs.
