High-voltage Afro-funk that pairs traditional Ibibio storytelling with razor-sharp electronic production. Vibrant, rhythmic, and impossible to keep still to.
Ibibio Sound Machine feels like a lightning bolt connecting 1970s Lagos to modern-day London. The music is a kaleidoscopic explosion of sound where West African highlife guitars and polyrhythmic percussion collide with the icy precision of post-punk synths. It is music that occupies the physical space between a spiritual ceremony and a neon-lit nightclub, driven by the commanding, soulful presence of Eno Williams.
What makes them truly distinctive is the linguistic and cultural bridge they build. By singing in the Ibibio language and drawing on folk tales passed down through generations, the band creates a sense of ancient storytelling wrapped in futuristic armor. The production, especially on their work with Hot Chip, brings a sleek, club-ready sheen to the raw energy of a live eight-piece horn section and heavy sub-bass.
Start with the album Electricity for a masterclass in how to modernize global funk. It captures the band at their most polished and adventurous, offering a gateway into their world of rhythmic complexity and infectious, life-affirming hooks that demand you move your body.
