IC3PEAK is a Moscow-based duo consisting of Anastasia Kreslina and Nikolay Kostylev, emerging in 2013 as part of the global witch house movement. Their early work, characterized by EPs like 'Substances' and 'Vacuum', focused on ethereal, abstract textures and English lyrics.
However, their 2017 album 'Сладкая жизнь' (Sweet Life) marked a pivotal shift toward Russian lyrics and a more aggressive, trap-influenced sound. This evolution was driven by a desire to engage directly with their Russian peers regarding social and political anxieties. Their music became increasingly confrontational, leading to significant censorship and the cancellation of several Russian tour dates in 2018 by local authorities. Critically, they are recognized for their 'audiovisual terror' aesthetic, where self-directed music videos are as essential as the audio. They occupy a unique space in the global underground, bridging the gap between the dark electronics of White Ring or Crim3s and the political art-pop of Pussy Riot. Their influence is significant within the 'sad girl' and 'doomer' internet subcultures, particularly in Eastern Europe.
