Ifwe

Ifwe, formed in Saint Petersburg in 2011 by brothers Misha and Sasha Pletnyov, emerged as a pivotal force in the Russian independent music scene. Their sound is a sophisticated distillation of dream pop, lo-fi, and indie pop, often categorized within the 'new quiet' movement of the early 2010s.

Unlike the more aggressive rock traditions of their region, Ifwe prioritized intimacy, using hushed Russian vocals and a blend of organic and electronic textures. Their debut full-length, 'My Coast' (2012), received critical acclaim, including a Steppenwolf Award, and solidified their reputation for creating evocative, nature-inspired soundscapes. The project is notable for its aesthetic consistency, leaning heavily into themes of nostalgia, childhood, and the natural world. Influenced by both Western indie acts like Kings of Convenience and the aesthetic of Soviet-era film soundtracks, they bridged a gap between global trends and local cultural resonance. While the members have moved into various electronic and solo projects, Ifwe remains a touchstone for the Russian 'indie' wave of the 2010s.
