Based in Chicago, Weiss transitioned from the melodic hardcore of The Progress to a sound that synthesized the intricate guitar work of American Football with the narrative songwriting of the 90s Jade Tree roster. The project gained significant underground traction through the '52 Weeks' project, where Weiss wrote and recorded a song every week for a year, demonstrating a work ethic that would define his career. Sonically, the music is characterized by clean-tone electric guitars, frequent use of math-rock influenced tapping, and a focus on place-based lyricism. Over time, the project evolved from solo acoustic performances to a sophisticated full-band arrangement, moving away from pop-punk structures toward a more expansive indie-rock aesthetic.
