Inventions

Lush guitar swells and intricate found-sound rhythms that feel like a coastal fog rolling in. A collaborative dreamscape for quiet focus or deep reflection.

Intro

Inventions creates a sound that feels both vast and incredibly intimate, like a secret whispered across a wide canyon. It is music that occupies the space between the grand, cinematic crescendos of post-rock and the microscopic, detailed textures of modern ambient. You can hear the fingerprints of its creators: the melodic warmth of Eluvium and the rhythmic, soaring guitar work of Explosions in the Sky, but here they are blended into something more fluid and experimental.

What makes them distinctive is their use of 'tiny' sounds to build 'big' emotions. They often incorporate rhythmic pulses made from what sounds like domestic clatter or outdoor field recordings, layering them with shimmering guitar delays and submerged vocal snippets. It doesn't just sit in the background; it creates a specific, windswept environment that feels alive and constantly shifting, like light reflecting off moving water.

Start with their self-titled debut for a perfect introduction to their melodic sensibilities. If you want something more rhythmically playful and collage-like, 'Continuous Portrait' shows their evolution into more complex, kaleidoscopic textures. It is the ideal companion for any moment that requires a sense of wonder without the weight of traditional song structures.

Inventions is an American musical ensemble signed to Temporary Residence Records, consisting of Matthew Cooper of Eluvium and Mark T. Smith of Explosions in the Sky. Inventions formed in 2013 as a side project for both musicians, whose main projects were signed to the same record label. In April 2014, the pair released a self-titled album which reached No. 22 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Inventions also released Maze of Woods (2015) and Continuous Portrait (2020).
